Into the Wild: Five Bucket List Hikes Around the World

Alex Allen

We love a good hike here at Culture Trip – especially when we’re on holiday. There’s no better way to connect with a place than by ambling through it at your own pace, stopping – often quite literally – to smell the roses. That’s why we’ve pulled together this list of the greatest hiking destinations around the world, all bookable through Culture Trip.

Wadi Rum Desert, Jordan

Hike the Dana Canyons in Jordan

Going for a hike in the rust-red landscape of Jordan’s Wadi Rum is the closest thing you’ll experience to walking on another planet. So otherworldly is it in fact, that it’s served as the primary filming location for a number of space-based films, from The Martian (2015) to Star Wars: the Rise of Skywalker (2019). And this intrepid nine-day adventure puts you right in the heart of it. You’ll spend the night with a local Bedouin family and hike through the red-walled Dana Canyons on the Shaq al Reesh trail. The next day, you can ease your aching muscles with a Dead Sea soak.

Cabo Beach, Tayrona National Park, Colombia

Hike the Tayrona National Park in Colombia

The jungle, mountains and Caribbean beaches in Colombia make it a hiker’s paradise. And this eight-day adventure makes the most of this lush landscape with a day of trekking through the jaw-dropping Tayrona National Park. Tayrona miraculously combines the best of all worlds – tropical rainforest and palm-fringed beaches sit against a backdrop of snowy mountain peaks – and you’ll want to keep an eye out for howler monkeys, iguanas (and, very occasionally, a jaguar) as you make your way through the thick vegetation. You’ll be rewarded with a sea dip at Cabo San Juan at the halfway point, before finishing in Canaveral.

Tibetan prayer flags hang from a line at Mardi Himal Base Camp

Hike high-altitude trails and through rice terraces in Nepal

If there’s one place every hiker dreams of taking on, it’s the Himalayas – and our epic 11-day expedition gives you the opportunity to do just that. You’ll start in the high-altitude, high-octane capital of Kathmandu – sling your backpack on and hit the dusty trail up to the hilltop temple complex at Nuwakot and spot proper Himalayan peaks in Sarangkot. It’s after this, however, that things get a bit tougher: a three-hour hike through rice terraces and remote villages will lead you to Naudanda, where you’ll spend the evening rowing out onto the mirror-like Phewa Lake.

Doi Inthanon landmark twin pagodas at Inthanon mountain near Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Hike Mae Hong Son and Doi Inthanon National Park in Thailand

With the heat and humidity, a hike in Thailand is rarely a stroll in the park – and our 10-day adventure includes two lengthy hikes to really get your blood pumping. The first is a full-day jungle trek around the hills of Mae Hong Son, where you’ll stomp through lush vegetation and stop to cool off at waterfalls along the way. The second one starts early, with a 4am wake-up to summit the peak of Doi Inthanon, where you’ll watch the sun break through the clouds. Your reward, later that day, is to feed and bathe former working elephants at Chiang Mai’s Elephant Nature Park.

Koruldi mountain lake, with clouds partially obscuring the snow-capped Caucasus mountains behind in Upper Svaneti, Georgia.

Hike around the Caucasus mountains in Georgia

Georgia is a hiker’s dream: jagged mountain peaks, remote villages and – while the country still flies under the radar – few crowds. Our nine-day adventure to this fascinating country includes a hike in Lagodekhi National Park, before heading into the Caucasus mountains for the trek up to Gergeti Trinity Church near Stepantsminda. You’ll have sublime views here, including of Mount Kazbegi – which towers over the area from a height of 5,054m (16,581ft). Finish up the trip with a well-deserved soak in the sulphur baths in Tbilisi.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
