There’s plenty of pros for going private. Obviously it means you can keep the guest-list locked down, but it also allows for far greater flexibility on travel dates, group sizes (minimum of 4) and even age requirements. Greek Island Odyssey

Let’s start by going straight to the horse’s mouth which, in this case, is the capital city of Greece. Athens is now a thriving modern city with a pulsating nightlife, vibrant street art and an eclectic range of interesting neighbourhoods. However, its most prominent feature, visually as well as culturally, is the Acropolis and its ancient remains, which still towers over the city today. You’ll get a guided visit of the Acropolis – which includes the Parthenon – on the first full day of this eight-day island-hopping adventure. From there we’ll set sail to the Cyclades, starting with Milos, where you’ll have plenty of time to visit the island’s ancient amphitheatre. On Naxos you’ll have the chance to visit the small islet of Palatia to discover a marble archway of an unfinished temple from 530BCE, known as Portara (or Great Door). Our odyssey reaches its climax in the gorgeous island of Santorini, where you’ll be able to discuss your learnings over a farewell dinner as the sun goes down on the island’s pretty whitewashed buildings.

The Greek amphitheatre in Taormina, Sicily

Spectacular Sicily

The largest island in the Mediterranean has, perhaps logically considering its strategic value, been touched by just about every major civilisation to have come and gone in this part of the world. The Roman and ancient Greek influences here are particularly prominent, making it one of the most fascinating places on Earth for students of the classics. Syracuse, the birthplace of Archimedes and, by the 3rd century BC, the most populous Greek city in the world, is one of many stops on our eight-day tour of the island. Other key historical cities on the itinerary include Catania, Cefalu and Palermo, the modern capital. You’ll also get to visit the beautiful ancient amphitheatre at Taormina, which looks out beautifully over the Mediterranean, having originally been a Hellenic creation, and was later rebuilt somewhat during Roman rule.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul Turkey. One of the greatest existing examples of Byzantine architecture.

Majestic Turkey

Turkey as we know it today, or Anatolia as it was known back then, is one of the most historically significant countries on the planet, particularly when it comes to European history and classical antiquity. It formed the primary battlefield for the Greco-Persian wars, with the land eventually conquered by Alexander the Great. The land later came under Roman rule, with Constantine the Great establishing what we consider today to be Istanbul, as Constantinople, the capital of Eastern Rome – AKA the Byzantine Empire. Our 12-day deep-dive into Turkey starts in this ancient metropolis, where you’ll get a tour of its most historical sights. Our travels through Cappadocia will offer you the chance to discover ancient ruins from the Hittite Empire, which directly preceded Persian and Greek eras, as well as the ancient Roman amphitheatre of Aspendos and Kaymakli Underground City, a surreal ancient cave citadel largely expanded during Byzantine rule.

Atmospheric sight of the Roman Bridge in Cordoba, Spain

Magical Madrid to Marrakech by Train

This epic 12-day Rail Trip traces the shared historical and cultural experiences of Iberia – a word coined by the Greeks – and North Africa. After a guided tour of the Spanish capital we’ll head south to Andalusia, where early societal developments were influenced heavily by Greek colonies. It was under Roman rule that the region began to enter a more modern western civilisation and our first stop, the ancient city of Cordoba, has a beautifully preserved Roman bridge right at its heart. The city is a fascinating blend of Roman, Byzantine and Moorish styles, as well as more those of modern Catholic Spain. After also stopping by in Seville we’ll cross over to Tangier, once a regional Roman capital. The Romans had multiple colonies and significant influence across Morocco, with some suggesting they reached as far as Casablanca, our next stop. Both Spain and Morocco were later conquered by Islamic civilisations, but there are still Roman remains in both nations, including the ancient city of Volubilis, which you can visit on our Epic Morocco itinerary.

View of a temple from the waters of the Nile in Aswan, Egypt

Ultimate Egypt 2024

We can’t talk about ancient civilisations without talking about Egypt, but what many travellers often forget is that after the Pyramids and the Pharaohs, this country became a huge part in the histories of ancient Greece and Rome. The country’s Hellenic rule began under Alexander the Great, who founded Alexandria as one of the most important Greek cities, and ended not long after Cleopatra’s time as the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty. The Romans swiftly followed suit, ruling the land for almost 700 years. Monuments of classical antiquity can be found all over the main destinations of our eight-day Egyptian odyssey – Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. Most notable is Dendera Temple in Luxor and Philae Temple, which you can paddle past as we kayak down the Nile on day seven.
