Samba dancers, surrounding by falling confetti and glitter, performing in a carnival with their band

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

No country embodies the spirit of dance quite like Brazil, and no city quite embodies the spirit of Brazil like Rio. Every single year, to mark the beginning of lent, the country explodes with colour, music and dance as millions of people gather to celebrate Carnaval. Huge, extravagant parades feature hundreds of samba schools, dolled up in glittery dance outfits and surrounding an epic convoy of floats. Visiting the city during Carnaval is once-in-a-lifetime stuff, but even if you can’t make it in February, Brazil’s passion for music and dance reverberates around the city all year round. Our Dazzling Brazil trip embraces that during its four days spent in the country’s most famous metropolis. You’ll be treated to an amazing Carnaval experience tour, which involves visiting a local samba school and learning all about the history of samba. You’ll even get to try on a traditional outfit yourself, sip on a caipirinha – Brazil’s national cocktail – and learn a few new moves to take home with you.

Flamenco dancer performing in the magnificent Plaza de Espana, Seville, Spain

Seville, Spain

While hip-shaking in Brazil is an expression of joy and freedom, dance traditions in Spain tend to be all about fiery passion, intensity and storytelling. There might not be a form of dance on Earth as intoxicating as flamenco, with those beautiful costumes, sharp movements and expressive performers. If you want to experience it at its most exhilarating you have to go to the southern region of Andalusia, where this art form originated. Most towns and cities will likely claim to be the birthplace of flamenco, but in modern Spain you can’t beat the region’s capital, Seville, for a live showing. Our Madrid to Marrakech Rail Trip stops off here and, on our first night, you’ll be treated to one of the most incredible live flamenco shows in the city. Fearsome, flamboyant, overwhelmingly emotional – this is one dance experience you won’t forget. The city’s nightlife is pretty lively too, so you can always ask the locals for an impromptu lesson afterwards.

Maasai Mara men in traditional colorful clothing showing traditional Maasai jumping dance in a Masai village, Kenya

Maasai Village, Kenya

Dance is often used as an expression of love, passion or melancholy, but it can also be used as an expression of physicality and power. That’s certainly the case when it comes to Adumu, the traditional jumping dance performed by the Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania. This tribal art form is thought to have originated as a training method for young Maasai warriors to improve their strength, agility and stamina. Over time it became embedded into the culture and developed as a staple ritual of any event, from weddings to religious events and cultural festivities. Conceptually it’s pretty simple; a group of young warriors gather in a circle and, accompanied by traditional songs and chants, precede to alternately jump in perfectly straight vertical lines. It is a competitive form of dance, with warriors judged on both the heights they reach and the endurance levels they show. The vibrant colours of their outfits – embellished with beaded jewellery – and the spiritual tone of the music, combined with the sheer physicality of it, makes for one of the most striking cultural performances imaginable. Our Immersive Kenya trip ends up in the Maasai Mara, where you’ll spend an entire day in a traditional Maasai village. You’ll witness and perform a variety of cultural activities, including an Adumu performance. Get ready to stand in awe of the pulsating energy of this unique dancing ritual and, if you fancy it, start practicing your vertical jumps early!

Women in colourful dresses, Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia

Dance, just like food, plays a huge part in most Latin American cultures. This is certainly the case in Colombia, which is home to a variety of vibrant dance styles, including the courtship dance of Cumbia and various types of Salsa. Head to the Caribbean coast, however, and it’s all about Champeta. Unlike the other forms of dance on this list it’s relatively new, thought to have developed in the ’70s and ’80s, combining Colombian dance traditions with Afro-Cuban percussive music. It became a major symbol of Afro-Colombian culture, with accompanying lyrics often very socially conscious, much like punk, reggae or hip hop. A lot of Afro-Colombian communities are found across the nation’s coastline, particularly in Cartagena. The first free African town in the Americas was actually liberated nearby, and you’ll get to visit it on our Caribbean Colombia trip. Later that day you’ll also get to take an optional Champeta class in Cartagena. It’s extremely rhythmic, infectiously so, and getting to grips with it is the best way to ingratiate yourself with the locals. There’s an incredible nightlife scene here, so you can work on your moves every single night of your stay, and there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the culture of Cartagena, which is as colourful on the inside as its pretty little streets are on the outside.
