Planning a field trip for your dance school? Whether you want them to experience the rhythm of South America first-hand, or appreciate the power of dance in tribal communities, book one of these Culture Trip itineraries as a private tour.

Loved by over 40s

There’s plenty of pros for going private. Obviously it means you can keep the guest-list locked down, but it also allows for far greater flexibility on travel dates, group sizes (minimum of 4) and even age requirements. Samba dancers, surrounding by falling confetti and glitter, performing in a carnival with their band

Dazzling Brazil

There’s not a country on Earth that better embodies the joy of dance, the freedom that rhythm brings and the power that performance can deliver. Brazil lives and breathes music and dance, especially Rio de Janeiro, where we spend four days on this vibrant South American tour. It’s all about samba here – infectiously rhythmic, pulsating with passion and energy. If you really want minds blown and hearts won over by samba music then you simply have to plan a trip during Carnaval, when the whole city explodes in colour, with glittery-costumed samba schools taking centre stage in extravagant parades throughout the city. We appreciate that booking at this time is expensive and logistically tricky, though, which is why our trip features a visit to one of said samba schools, where you’ll learn all about the history of samba, it’s core principles and the secrets behind mastering Brazilian rhythm. You’ll even get to try on the traditional sparkly outfits and test out your samba skills in style!

Flamenco dancer performing in the magnificent Plaza de Espana, Seville, Spain

City Hopping in Spain by Train

Flamenco is one of the most fascinating forms of dance to study. Brimming with fiery passion and sharp movements; it’s a pretty unique spectacle. From expressive usage of the arms to the rigid angles of the dancer’s back, and the rhythmic stamping of feet, the skillset required to master this art form is impressive. Most importantly, it extends to dramatic performance. No flamenco dance can be considered authentic without simmering emotional intensity, after all. The dance was born in the narrow streets of Seville’s Triana neighbourhood, which we’ll explore on this cultural odyssey through the heartland of central and southern Spain. As well as touring Seville and gorging on tapas in Triana, you’ll also get the opportunity to visit a live flamenco show in the place where it truly belongs. Now that is an experience you will never forget.

Colourful Cartagena street full of hanging flowers, looking towards the town square

Caribbean Colombia

Back in South America, Colombia might not be quite so famous as Brazil when it comes to shaking hips but, like most Latin American cultures, dance plays a huge part in Colombian life. The country is home to various styles, including the unique courtship dance of Cumbia and various types of Salsa. On the Caribbean coast, however, it’s all about Champeta. This singular form of expression was born out of the region’s numerous Afro-Colombian communities, most notably in the pretty city of Cartagena, during the ’70s and ’80s when traditional Colombian dance traditions started to blend with percussive Afro-Cuban music. It’s also often accompanied by socially conscious lyrics, in a similar vein to punk, reggae and hip hop. You’ll have the option to join a Champeta class in Cartagena on this eight-day itinerary. Prepare to be intoxicated by Champeta’s extremely rhythmic beats, and don’t forget to put your newfound skills to the test by embracing the city’s vibrant nightlife.

Internal shot of the seats in the Vienna State Opera, Austria

Berlin to Budapest: The Best of Central Europe by Train

Make sure everyone packs their finest attire for this one, as we embrace ballroom in the classical heart of Central Europe. This itinerary is a nostalgic nod to the romance of train travel on the continent, as we take in five of Europe’s prettiest capital cities across just 10 days. Perhaps the most significant of which from a dance perspective is Vienna. The Austrian capital exudes sophistication, with a rich history (in both senses of the word) in classical music, ballroom dancing and the grand old ceremony of throwing together a glamorous ball. Plan your visit in January or February and we should be able to arrange an evening at a ball, where your class can learn first-hand the secrets behind mastering the elegant movements of the Viennese waltz.

Maasai Mara men in traditional colorful clothing showing traditional Maasai jumping dance in a Masai village, Kenya

Immersive Kenya

To dig deeper into the true, inherently human powers of expression through dance, it’s probably best to escape the high-flying world of ball-season and searching out something a little more instinctive. Perhaps the best example of the ways in which people use their bodies to communicate specific emotions can be found in tribal dances. In the remote Maasai villages of the Maasai Mara you can find tribal communities that still live largely detached from modern civilisation. Day six of our Kenya trip is dedicated solely to experiencing village life first hand, and the highlight of the day is without doubt the chance to witness Adumu, a traditional jumping dance performed by Maasai warriors. The dance is a pure expression of physicality and power, thought to have originated as an actual training method for young warriors. It’s simple, but awe-inspiring live. A group of warriors gather in a circle and are accompanied by songs and tribal chanting. The aim is jump as high, as powerfully, and as perfectly straight as possible, with warriors judged on endurance as well as the heights they reach. The vibrant colours of their outfits, the spiritual nature of the music and the striking physical prowess on show makes this a truly profound dance experience.
