Get onboard a hop-on, hop-off wine tram in the South African Winelands

The Cape Winelands in South Africa is one of the most beautiful wine regions on the planet, and one of the most popular grape producers, too. Right in the middle of our 11-day odyssey along South Africa’s splendid Garden Route is some time spent at a luxurious country lodge in the middle of this region. The highlight of the trip for any certified wino is without doubt a day almost entirely dedicated to the Franschhoek hop-on, hop-off wine tram which, yes, does exactly what you hope it does. We’ll go from vineyard to vineyard sampling incredible wines and arguing over our favourites as we chug along in this adorable little locomotive. That’s the dream you never knew you had, right?

Green rows of vineyards in a rural landscape near Tuscany

Explore the tastes and terroir of Tuscany in San Gimignano

Embrace la dolce vita on this nine-day Rail Trip, touring the highlights of Northern Italy. Start in Rome and visit the most famous landmarks in the city, including the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum. Next, the moment your taste buds have been waiting for – the Tuscan countryside. We’ll set up shop at Podere La Marronaia, a local farm and winery near San Gimignano, for a tasting extravaganza that includes olive oil and four foodie courses, as well as plenty of wine, naturally. We’ll continue on to have a gourmet food tour in Bologna and a culinary road trip through Emilia-Romagna before ending up in Milan, but we suspect it’s that little farm in Tuscany that you’ll be thinking of on the flight home.

Discover the underrated, and under-drank beauty of Jordanian wines

Jordan is not the first destination that enters anyone’s mind when thinking of a wine expedition. In fact the Middle East is probably the last place you’d look, but Jordan’s relatively young wine scene is fast up-and-coming, as local winemakers blend ancient techniques with modern tech to develop a rich blends of grapes, from classical Cabernet Sauvignon’s to indigenous varieties like Hamdani and Dabouki. Day two of our Discover Jordan trip ends with a street food tour of Amman, followed by a sumptuous tasting session of local wines. Get ahead of the curve, get into Jordanian wines and show off your new-found knowledge to your fellow wine-lovers back home.

Sip lunchtime wines at a local restaurant in rural Sicily

Ok, we didn’t want to double-up on Italy but can you really blame us? The wine culture is incredible in most Mediterranean countries, but there’s something about Italy that really gets us in the mood for a bottle or two. Plus, the island of Sicily is a heck of a long way south of Tuscany’s rolling hills, meaning the grape varieties grown in the almost-arid summers here can be very different. Day three of our Sicily trip starts with a hike along an old Roman trail in the Madonie Mountains, before we stop in the small town of Castelbuono for lunch and a wine tasting at an authentic local restaurant. There’ll be plenty more wine flowing throughout the trip, with palette cleansers coming in the form of fine chocolate and world-beating gelato. Delicious.
